KATHMANDU: The public prosecutor has lodged an appeal with the Patan High Court, seeking the maximum penalty for cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane in the rape case.

District Court Kathmandu had previously sentenced Sandeep to 8 years in prison, along with a fine of 3 lakh rupees and a compensation payment of 2 lakh rupees to the victim, on Poush 25 (Jan 10).

During the trial, the public prosecutor had pushed for a 13-year jail term for Sandeep, arguing that the victim was underage.

Sources indicate that the government attorney’s office has approached the Patan High Court, contending that the District Court’s judgment should be annulled due to the discrepancy between the sentencing and their demands, especially considering the victim’s minor status.

Additionally, cricketer Lamichhane has lodged an appeal with the Patan High Court, seeking the reversal of the district court’s verdict and his exoneration.
