KATHMANDU: The police have intervened on those celebrating ‘Dhoti Diwas’ at Maitighar in Kathmandu.

The police intervened on those who had gathered in Maitighar to celebrate ‘Dhoti Diwas’ on the occasion of January 1.

On Monday, some people of the Madhesi community had gathered wearing white dhotis, displaying a banner that read ‘Dhoti Diwas.’

The police intervened as the gathering violated the current government restrictions on activities like protests and gatherings in the Maitighar area.

A confrontation ensued between the police and the participants during the attempted removal.

It is essential to note that the government has currently imposed a ban on demonstrations, gatherings, processions, and similar activities in Maitighar.

In order to promote Nepali hats and clothing, ‘Topi’ Day has been celebrated spontaneously on the first day of the new year of AD Sambat for some years.
