KATHMANDU: The whereabouts of Bipin Joshi, a Nepali student held hostage since the Oct 7 Hamas attack in southern Israel, remains unknown.

This has posed challenges for the government in securing his repatriation.

Hamas has suspended hostage releases until a complete cessation of aggression, complicating efforts to bring Joshi back.

Despite diplomatic efforts and seeking support from Qatar and international communities, Joshi was excluded from previous Israel-Hamas exchanges.

The conflict has taken a toll, with 10 Nepali students killed, and an Israeli report citing 20,000 deaths in Gaza, including 8,000 children and 6,200 women.

Presently, Hamas reportedly holds around 120 hostages.

Ongoing negotiations in Cairo did not lead to a new truce on Wednesday.

The uncertainty surrounding Joshi’s fate underscores the urgency for diplomatic resolution amid the Israel-Hamas conflict.
