KATHMANDU: The National Farmers’ Network has held a sit-in at the Kalimati Vegetable and Fruit Market Development Committee’s headquarters.

The network’s sit-in, which began on Thursday, continues today.

They staged a sit-in demanding that the lease contract be cancelled and that the market shutters and booths be rented through free competition.

According to Ganesh Chandra Timalsina, Chair of the Nepal Farmers Federation, the movement in the agriculture sector has begun.

He cautioned that the government is enacting measures that are detrimental to farmers’ rights and interests, and that the unrest would worsen.

They have protested with placards and slogans such as cancelling the lease agreement without competition, letting market shutters and stalls be rented through open competition, and ensuring 50 percent farmer representation in the market development committee.
