KATHMANDU: Workers from the Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) and the CPN (Unified Socialist Party), as well as students affiliated with both parties, presented a black flag to CPN-UML Chairperson KP Sharma Oli in Janakpur on Saturday.

After President Bidya Devi Bhandari refused to certify the citizenship bill, which had been passed twice by both houses of the Federal Parliament, the House of Representatives and the National Assembly, Oli held up a black flag and stated that the UML supports it.

JSP has announced an extreme movement against the President in Madhesh. Oli, who had arrived in Bideha Municipality of Dhanusha to participate in the program, traveled by train amid tight security to the event venue at Tinkauria Chowk.

Protests have started in Madhesh from various sides against President Bidya Devi Bhandari’s move to block the Citizenship Bill. Protesters have been demanding the resignation of the president since they showed black flags to the leaders.

Twelve people were arrested for waving a black flag at Oli. President Oli was detained by police after they displayed a black flag to him as he exited the Janakpur airport. Previously, when Oli arrived in Janakpurdham on September 12, police detained five youths for attempting to display the black flag.

Madhesh-centric parties are protesting against President Bidya Devi Bhandari in Madhesh districts, demanding that the Citizenship Bill be verified. When Oli arrived in Janakpur, a black flag was displayed.

Other Madhesh forces are also protesting the President’s move. The Janmat Party, led by CK Raut, has announced a phased protest against President Bhandari’s refusal to certify the Citizenship Bill. The protest was announced at the Janmat Party’s central executive committee meeting on Sept 23.

The party claims that by not validating the Citizenship Bill, the President has deprived millions of eligible citizens of their right to citizenship. On Sept 25 and 26, in addition to Dashain greetings in each ward, there will be miking on the issue of removing citizenship rights, from Sept 28 to Oct 4, there will be an interaction program and protest at the ward level in the morning and afternoon, and on Oct 19th, an effigy burning program will be held.
