KATHMANDU: JAN. 23 – Local elections cannot be postponed, according to the UML.

UML chairperson KP Sharma Oli stated in a statement released on Sunday that any uncertainty, dishonesty, or justifications about local elections will not be accepted.

Oli, on the other hand, stated that the UML is prepared to confront any election. Oli stated, “We have a clear opinion that local elections should not be pushed under this pretext.”

Despite the Election Commission’s recommendation that municipal elections be held on April 27 and May 5, the ruling coalition has been unable to reach an agreement. The coalition has been considering whether to hold federal, state, and local elections in Mangsir (November/December) at the same time.

While the ruling coalition is debating the issue of postponing the local elections, UML Chairperson Oli has made public the party’s official stance in a statement. Stating that the constitution did not envisage a vacancy at the local level, the UML stressed on holding the election on the date recommended by the Election Commission.

Though the UML has said that it will hold a press conference to make the party’s official position public, Oli’s statement has been made public through a press release after the Oli tests positive for COVID-19.
