KATHMANDU: AUGUST 23 – In the Newar community, religious dances are performed according to different times and festivals. Most dances are related to the story of gods and goddesses. Lakhey dances are also major dances.

There are various differences of opinion as to when the practice of not dancing in the Kathmandu Valley started. Some have said that when King Harisingh Dev brought Taleju Bhavani from Simraungadh to the valley, Lakhey was brought with the goddess. Some even argue that the Thakuri king from Nuwakot brought Lakhey with him to the valley.

According to the Nepali language genealogy, the practice of Lakhey dance seems to have started from the time of King Gunakamdev. But looking at the history, since the time of King Pratap Malla, Lakhey dances have been performed wearing crowns. Lakhey dances, especially Dha and Bhusya, are performed by playing the music. In some places, they do even dance to the tune of the flute.
