Deepa and Sujan were married in 2069 BS, but Sujan was jailed the same year for murdering his brother.
KATHMANDU: A mother and her two daughters were brutally killed early Wednesday in Milijuli Path, Butwal Sub-metropolitan City-11.
Police said 34-year-old Deepa Basyal and her daughters, 7-year-old Sneha and 4-year-old Himani, were murdered by Deepa’s ex-husband, 35-year-old Sujan Koirala, using a knife and hammer.
Deepa and Sujan were married in 2069 BS, but Sujan was jailed the same year for murdering his brother.
They divorced in 2072 BS. Deepa later remarried Shankar Dhakal of Kawasoti; her two daughters are from this marriage.
Dhakal is currently working in Dubai.
Deepa, a health worker from Palpa, had come to Butwal for a relative’s wedding and stayed overnight with Sujan, who had invited her.
Around 4 a.m. Wednesday, Sujan killed them. He called a worker at 6 a.m., which led to the discovery of the crime.
Sujan was arrested, and police are investigating the motive.
Neighbors said Sujan was released from prison after serving 8-9 years and receiving a presidential pardon.
Prison-made goods were found stored in his home.
The bodies were sent for postmortem to Lumbini Provincial Hospital.
Relatives only learned of Deepa’s arrival in Butwal after the incident.
