X contacts Nepal govt for registration, Meta yet to respond
According to the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, the platform's Singapore office sent an official email today.
KATHMANDU: Following the Nepal government’s decision to ban unregistered social media platforms, the popular microblogging site X (formerly Twitter) has formally reached out to initiate the registration process.
According to the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, the platform’s Singapore office sent an official email today.
Ministry spokesperson Gajendra Thakur confirmed the receipt of the communication and stated that the registration process will move forward immediately upon receiving the required documents.
“Once we get the necessary documentation, we will proceed with the registration without delay,” Thakur said.
Meanwhile, Facebook’s parent company Meta has yet to establish any official communication with the ministry. “There might have been informal contact at an individual level, but we haven’t received anything official from Facebook,” added Thakur.
Among domestic platforms, Nepal-based social media app Hamro Patro has already submitted all required documents and details to the ministry as of yesterday.
As of now, no other international or local social media platforms have formally contacted the ministry regarding registration.
The government’s recent move aims to regulate social media platforms operating in Nepal and ensure accountability through mandatory registration.
