KATHMANDU: A ward chair in Bahrabise Municipality, Sindhupalchowk has been arrested on charges related to document forgery after allegedly issuing an official recommendation falsely stating that a married man was unmarried, police said Thursday.

Resham Tamang, the elected ward chair of Ward No. 2 and a member of the Nepali Congress, was taken into custody from Bahrabise, according to Sindhupalchowk Police Chief SP Kaji Kumar Acharya.

Police said an investigation was launched after obtaining court approval to detain and question Tamang in connection with an alleged forgery case.

According to investigators, Tamang allegedly issued an official recommendation certifying a man as “unmarried” despite the matter falling outside his legal authority and despite prior objections filed at the ward office.

The man’s wife had reportedly submitted a written application to the ward office stating that her husband was legally married and urging officials not to issue such a recommendation.

However, police say the document was ignored and the recommendation was subsequently issued.

Authorities said the arrest followed a complaint filed by the victim’s side.

Police have also seized documents related to the recommendation, including the written application submitted to the ward office, as part of the ongoing investigation.

Further investigation into the case is underway, police said.
