Unveiling queer truths: Inside the story of Chandra Lai Kasle Maryo? (video)
The performance deeply moved me. It portrayed the emotional highs and lows faced by a queer man in society — raw, real, and heartbreakingly powerful.
KATHMANDU: For me, members of the gender minority community have always been a source of deep inspiration.
They constantly remind me, “Nari Hunu Ma Garva Garnu Parchha Hai (Be proud to be a woman).” That’s why I have always carried a deep sense of respect for this community.
About a week ago, I attended the play “Chandra Lai Kasle Maryo (Who Killed Chandra?)” at Mandala Theatre.
The performance deeply moved me. It portrayed the emotional highs and lows faced by a queer man in society — raw, real, and heartbreakingly powerful.
Intrigued by the depth of the play, I wanted to explore the stories behind its creation. So, I decided to invite the cast of “Who Killed Chandra?” to our studio for a conversation as part of our program “Mero Swapna Sansar : Katha (My Dream World: Stories That Become Reality).”
To my delight, playwright, director, conceptualizer, and actor Sandeep Shrestha, along with fellow actor Tenju Yonjan — both proud members of the gender minority community — accepted our invitation.
In our studio, we had a heartfelt conversation that spanned from the struggles of identity to the triumphs of self-expression. Their journeys, challenges, and resilience are truly inspiring.
During the discussion, they offered insightful advice to others from the gender minority community — practical ways to navigate hardships, maintain courage, and find community. They also shared some deeply emotional behind-the-scenes experiences from “Chandra Lai Kasle Maryo?”
