KATHMANDU: CPN (UML) leader Nawaraj Silwal has emphasized that the government should plan for a second phase of elections in the Himalayan regions due to logistical and geographical challenges.

Speaking at a discussion organized by the Nepal Law Society on Tuesday with experts on the upcoming House of Representatives elections, Silwal stressed that while natural and weather-related obstacles may warrant postponement in high-altitude areas, there are no security threats that could halt the elections elsewhere in the country.

Silwal added that the readiness of political parties, the Election Commission, security agencies, and the government demonstrates that Nepal is now fully prepared to proceed with elections.

He also expressed dissatisfaction over the Supreme Court’s delay in hearing the case related to the reinstatement of Parliament, urging the judiciary to deliver timely and clear decisions to enhance its credibility.

Drawing parallels with Bangladesh, he noted that despite the violence in Aug 2024 and a subsequent interim government that failed to hold elections for two years, Nepal has successfully maintained its constitutional election process following the Gen Z movement on 23-24 Bhadra.

Silwal highlighted that bringing both old and new political forces together under the current constitution for elections sends a message of peace and stability from Nepal. However, he cautioned that the election outcomes could be mixed, and issues raised during the Gen-G movement may remain unresolved.

He further noted that under the current electoral system, no single party is likely to secure a majority, which could hinder the implementation of parties’ election pledges.
