KATHMANDU: Nepal has recorded its highest pre-monsoon rainfall in the past 45 years, according to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.

The department reported that the country received an average of 339.77 millimeters of rainfall during this year’s pre-monsoon period, which is 145.5 percent of the normal average of 226.3 millimeters.

Meteorologist Sanjiv Adhikari said the unusually high rainfall was triggered by an active western low-pressure system, strong local winds, and intense heat conditions that together intensified pre-monsoon weather activity.

Official data shows that this year’s rainfall has broken the previous record set in 1990, when Nepal received 331.40 millimeters of rain.

Other notable years include 2000 with 323.19 millimeters, 2021 with 317.88 millimeters, and 2020 with 315.78 millimeters.

The department noted that the sharp rise in pre-monsoon rainfall may indicate ongoing changes in the climate system.

It also highlighted an increase in extreme weather events such as lightning, storms, hailstorms, and heavy rainfall across various parts of the country.

Officials confirmed that the 2026 pre-monsoon rainfall has now been officially recorded as the highest in available meteorological history since 1990.
