KATHMANDU: The CPN-UML has strongly objected to the government’s decision regarding displaced squatters, terming it inadequate and poorly planned.

Speaking in the House of Representatives (Nepal), UML MP Guru Baral criticized the government’s policy of providing a lump sum assistance of Rs 25,000 and requiring displaced families to arrange their own shelter.

He argued that the support package is unrealistic given the cost of living, especially around the Kathmandu Valley, where even daily survival is difficult on minimal income. “How can a family survive on about 100 rupees a day?” he questioned, calling the decision “a serious humanitarian injustice.”

Baral further said the eviction of squatters without proper preparation has worsened their situation, pushing families into temporary holding centers where living conditions are reportedly poor. He highlighted concerns over the health and safety of vulnerable groups, including pregnant women, children, and students, saying many are facing malnutrition, psychological stress, and disruption in education.

He urged the government to focus on a sustainable housing solution rather than temporary financial assistance, stressing that displaced families require dignified and long-term resettlement arrangements.
