UML leaders propose ban on former presidents, VPs in politics
The suggestion was presented on the final day of the convention following group discussions.
KATHMANDU: In a significant development during the ongoing party convention in Godawari, Lalitpur, leaders of the CPN (UML) have proposed a constitutional amendment to prevent former Presidents, Vice Presidents, and other high-ranking constitutional officials from re-entering active politics.
The suggestion was presented on the final day of the convention following group discussions.
Key party leaders, including Kailash Dhungel, Chair of the Bagmati Province, and Chandeshwar Mandal, Chair of the Madhesh Province, voiced their concerns and called for a clear provision in the party’s statute to restrict such individuals from pursuing political roles after their tenure in constitutional offices.
This proposal was shared by Rajendra Gautam, the party’s publicity department head.
In addition, the leaders emphasized the need for increased support to farmers, greater political representation for martyr families, and the development of a scientific evaluation system within the party structure.
These suggestions reflect the party’s ongoing efforts to address key national issues while reforming its internal processes.
During the convention, discussions also revolved around political proposals presented by Chair KP Sharma Oli, constitutional amendments by Vice Chair Bishnu Paudel, and organizational reforms proposed by General Secretary Shankar Pokharel.
The discussions were held in ten separate groups, with each group offering valuable recommendations for the party’s future direction.
In his closing remarks, Chair Oli addressed members’ concerns, providing responses to various queries raised during the deliberations. The convention is expected to conclude with the finalization of these proposals.
