UML lawmaker urges clarity on Pathibhara cable car project, slams road delays
Thebe said the project faces opposition from some groups, while others see it as vital for development, tourism and employment in the region.
KATHMANDU: Kshitij Thebe on Tuesday urged the government to clarify its official position on the controversial Pathibhara (Mukumlung) cable car project in Taplejung, warning that uncertainty surrounding the project has confused local residents.
Addressing the House of Representatives, the CPN-UML lawmaker said verbal reports suggesting the cable car project had been halted were fueling public uncertainty in the district.
Thebe said the project faces opposition from some groups, while others see it as vital for development, tourism and employment in the region.
He called on the government to balance local religious and cultural sentiments with infrastructure development through a clear and concrete policy.
“The people of Taplejung are waiting for clear information. Will this project move forward or be stopped? What is the government’s official position?” he asked in Parliament.
Thebe also criticized severe delays in the construction of the road section linking Lumbini Bridge and Dobhan Bazaar in Taplejung, describing the situation as “shameful.”
According to him, the contract for the road project was awarded in 2077 and its deadline expired in 2080 before being extended again. Despite multiple extensions, he said, even the basic road track has yet to be opened.
Recalling his recent journey from Taplejung to Kathmandu, Thebe said vehicles were unable to operate on the road until a bulldozer cleared the route.
He urged the government to immediately accelerate work on the stalled road section and end delays in critical infrastructure projects in the district.
