Two held for holding man hostage

KATHMANDU: Two men have been arrested for allegedly luring a young Nepali man to India under the pretext of a lucrative foreign employment opportunity and then holding him hostage.

According to Ramesh Bahadur Pal, spokesperson for the District Police Office, 26-year-old Suraj Mukhiya of Kalyanpur Municipality–7 and 22-year-old Prashant Chaudhary of Lahan Municipality–11 were taken into custody.

The accused reportedly convinced 26-year-old Rishkesh Kumar Marik of Kalyanpur, Gunarpur Municipality–7, to travel to Gaya, India, promising him an attractive job.

Upon arrival on Jan 4, the victim’s mobile phone and certificates were confiscated, and he was held captive in a hostel, according to the victim’s statement.

Police said the suspects repeatedly beat the victim, threatened his life, and demanded ransom from his family.

The accused reportedly extorted NPR 217,200 from the victim’s family and an additional INR 30,000 from Marik himself.

The police have registered a case and are investigating further.
