KATHMANDU: Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Maharajgunj has successfully carried out Nepal’s first-ever gender reassignment surgery.

A 25-year-old transgender individual from Janakpur underwent a successful reconstruction of female genitalia, utilizing the necessary male genital tissue.

This milestone procedure was part of a special surgical camp organized by the hospital’s Plastic Surgery Department from Jestha 12 to 15, which included various gender-affirming surgeries such as facial feminization and breast augmentation.

Hospital spokesperson and Associate Professor Dr. Gopal Sedhai stated that this complex and highly sensitive surgery is now available in Nepal, eliminating the need for transgender individuals to travel abroad for such procedures. “These surgeries are often prohibitively expensive overseas. Having this facility here will bring significant relief to the transgender community and support them in affirming their gender identity,” he said.

The surgical team was led by visiting plastic surgeon Dr. Eliza Hamidian Jahromi and coordinated by the head of the department, Prof. Dr. Jayanman Shrestha.

The entire plastic surgery and anesthesia team at the hospital participated in the groundbreaking operation.

Dr. Shrestha also confirmed that gender-affirming surgeries will now be offered regularly, with plans underway to establish a dedicated ‘Gender Affirming Clinic’ at TU Teaching Hospital.
