KATHMANDU: Once the site of a tragic bus accident that claimed over 20 lives, including former Finance State Minister Hariraj Khewa, Sidhuwa Bazar has now emerged as a popular domestic tourism destination.

The incident, which occurred nearly a decade ago, left a lasting mark on the local community.

Today, the site has been transformed into a tourist-friendly space.

The Hariraj Khewa Memorial Foundation has constructed a building at the location, commemorating the lives lost, while efforts by local organizations like Youth for Change have enhanced the area’s aesthetic appeal.

Colorful Nepalese flags line the roadside, adding vibrancy and drawing visitors to the area.

The highlight of this transformation is the “Selfie Zone”, where tourists engage in photography, vlogging, and TikTok content creation.

The scenic hilltop location provides panoramic views, making it a favorite spot for social media enthusiasts.

However, the increase in tourist activity has raised safety concerns.

The Selfie Zone is located on a winding road, where visitors frequently park motorcycles or stop for photos, creating congestion and increasing the risk of accidents.

Social media discussions have recently highlighted the potential danger posed by tourists moving back and forth on the narrow roads.

Experts suggest that placing warning signs 100 meters before and after the hilltop area—with messages like “Crowded Road Ahead – Slow Down”, “Tourist Destination Ahead – Slow Down”, or “Selfie Zone – Slow Down”—could help manage both tourism and road safety.

As Sidhuwa Bazar balances its tragic past with its present role as a domestic tourism hotspot, local authorities and community groups are focusing on ensuring that the area remains both attractive and safe for visitors.
