Sunrisers Hyderabad go top after 33-run win over Punjab Kings
Chasing a daunting 236-run target, Punjab Kings finished on 202/7 in 20 overs despite a magnificent unbeaten century from Cooper Connolly.
KATHMANDU: Sunrisers Hyderabad stormed to the top of the Indian Premier League standings with a commanding 33-run victory over Punjab Kings in a high-scoring thriller in Hyderabad on Wednesday.
Chasing a daunting 236-run target, Punjab Kings finished on 202/7 in 20 overs despite a magnificent unbeaten century from Cooper Connolly.
The left-hander fought valiantly with an unbeaten 107 off 59 balls, reaching his century in style and carrying the chase deep into the innings.
However, a lack of support from the other end proved costly, with no other Punjab batter crossing 28 runs as the team slipped to its third consecutive defeat.
Earlier, Sunrisers Hyderabad produced another explosive batting display to pile up 235/4 after winning the toss and electing to bat.
Travis Head set the tone with a blistering 38 off just 19 balls, while Abhishek Sharma hammered 35 from 13 deliveries in a destructive opening stand.
The momentum continued through Heinrich Klaasen and Ishan Kishan, who punished Punjab’s bowling attack with a rapid partnership.
Klaasen smashed 69 off 43 balls, while Kishan added a fluent 55 from 32 deliveries. Returning from injury, Nitish Kumar Reddy provided the finishing flourish with an unbeaten 29 off 13 balls.
Punjab’s sloppy fielding proved decisive. The visitors dropped three catches and missed a stumping opportunity, allowing Hyderabad’s batters to capitalize fully.
Kishan survived on 9, 18 and 19, while Klaasen was reprieved on 9 before both went on to produce match-defining knocks.
Hyderabad dominated the powerplay, racing to 79 runs in the first six overs. Abhishek attacked from the outset, taking on Arshdeep Singh and Marco Jansen with fearless strokeplay, while Head launched a barrage of boundaries and sixes to put Punjab under immediate pressure.
Punjab’s chase never truly recovered after early setbacks. Under the sharp leadership of captain Pat Cummins, Hyderabad’s bowlers struck regularly to derail the innings. Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh and skipper Shreyas Iyer all fell cheaply, leaving Connolly with too much to do.
Cummins and Shivam Kumar claimed two wickets each, while Eshan Malinga lifted the side further with a stunning catch in the field.
The victory takes Sunrisers Hyderabad to the top of the IPL table with 14 points, while Punjab Kings drop to second place with 13 points.
