Singha Durbar toilets in poor state despite cleanliness drive

KATHMANDU: Even after the government concluded a nationwide “National Sanitation Week” across federal, provincial, and local offices until Jestha 1 (May 15), the condition of public toilets inside the country’s main administrative hub, Singha Durbar, has raised serious concerns.
A recent observation found that although the toilets appear relatively clean at first glance, they lack basic facilities such as a functioning water supply for flushing.
Visitors have reportedly faced significant inconvenience due to the absence of water, making the facilities difficult to use.
In addition, broken door latches and poor maintenance have further worsened the situation, leading to unsanitary conditions in a space that sees regular public and official use.
The Prime Minister’s Office had earlier issued the “Sanitation Week Operational Guidelines 2083” and led cleanliness campaigns across government bodies.
However, the deteriorating condition of toilets within Singha Durbar has highlighted a gap between policy implementation and on-ground reality.
