KATHMANDU: Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Rachana Khatiwada has urged the government to immediately withdraw cases filed against youths involved in various pro-democracy and political change movements, arguing that they are being subjected to unnecessary legal harassment.

Speaking in Monday’s House of Representatives meeting, she said that young participants of past movements are still facing arrest warrants and legal actions despite their contributions to political transformation.

She emphasized that the sacrifices of martyrs and injured individuals during people’s movements laid the foundation of the current government.

Khatiwada questioned the government’s failure to implement its own commitment to withdraw “false cases,” asking why promised legal relief for movement participants has not yet been delivered.

She further alleged that police actions have intensified in the Panauti area of Kavre district following the appointment of a new Superintendent of Police, claiming that youths are being targeted and subjected to intimidation through increased raids and arrests.

Calling for immediate intervention, she urged the government to ensure that citizens who contributed to political change are not treated as offenders and stressed the need to guarantee a peaceful and fear-free environment for the public.
