Rising road accidents claim 18 lives in Jhapa over 25 days
Frequent collisions & reckless driving lead to a surge in fatalities across Jhapa district.
KATHMANDU: Road accidents are on the rise in Jhapa district, claiming 18 lives over the past 25 days, according to the District Traffic Police Office.
The fatalities occurred between Jan 15 and Feb 8.
On Sunday, a tractor accident in Biring Khola, Arjundhara Municipality–7, resulted in the death of the co-driver.
The tractor, registration number Pr 1–01–001 Ta 9010, was transporting sand when the co-driver’s 16-year-old son, Saroj Shrestha, fell from the vehicle and was crushed under the rear wheel.
Saroj was the son of Harka Shrestha, a resident of Arjundhara–3.
Meanwhile, 45-year-old Rajan Banskota, also from Arjundhara–3, who had been injured in a scooter collision three days earlier, died on Sunday during treatment at B&C Hospital in Birtamode.
According to Inspector Santosh Rai of the District Traffic Police Office, Banskota had been hit by a scooter on Feb 4 at Garuwa Chowk, Arjundhara–3, while crossing the Birtamode–Khudunabari road.
The scooter, registration Pr 1–01–018 P 167, was driven by 35-year-old Amrita Rai of Mai Municipality–3, Ilam.
Both the scooter driver and the vehicle are in police custody.
Earlier, on the same day, two people were killed in a tipper collision in Damak.
On Jan 15, three lives were lost in separate road accidents.
Since then, the district has witnessed nearly daily incidents resulting in human casualties.
The district traffic authorities have urged motorists and pedestrians alike to exercise extreme caution, as road safety continues to be a major concern.
