Real Madrid slip as Osasuna claim 2–1 win
Despite Vinícius Júnior scoring his fifth goal in four matches, the Spanish giants were unable to avoid defeat.
KATHMANDU: Real Madrid suffered a shock 2–1 defeat against Osasuna on Saturday in La Liga, missing a golden opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the table.
Despite Vinícius Júnior scoring his fifth goal in four matches, the Spanish giants were unable to avoid defeat.
The result hands a major boost to Barcelona in the title race.
Real Madrid had aimed to open up a five-point cushion at the summit, but Osasuna took the lead in the 38th minute when Ante Budimir converted from the penalty spot.
Vinícius brought the visitors level in the 73rd minute, raising hopes of at least salvaging a point.
However, Osasuna snatched a dramatic winner in the 90th minute through Raúl García, handing Real Madrid their first league defeat in six matches under coach Álvaro Arbeloa.
The victory marked Osasuna’s first La Liga win over Real Madrid since 2011 and lifted the Pamplona-based side to ninth place in the standings.
Real Madrid remain two points clear of Barcelona, having played one match more.
Hansi Flick’s Barcelona can reclaim top spot with a home win against Levante on Sunday.
