KATHMANDU: Real Madrid booked their place in the Spanish Super Cup final with a 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid on Thursday, thanks to goals from Federico Valverde and Rodrygo.

The win sets up an El Clasico final against Barcelona, who secured their spot with a dominant 5-0 win over Athletic Club in the other semifinal.

Playing in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Real Madrid took the lead just 77 seconds into the match.

Captain Valverde struck a stunning free-kick from around 30 yards, leaving the Atletico goalkeeper with no chance.

Rodrygo doubled Madrid’s advantage in the 55th minute, finishing beautifully after controlling a precise pass from Valverde.

Atletico pulled one back three minutes later through Alexander Sørloth, who scored with a header. Despite continued pressure, Diego Simeone’s side failed to find an equalizer.

Real managed the win despite the absence of Kylian Mbappe, who missed the match due to injury.

The final between Real Madrid and Barcelona will be played on Sunday.

Under the current agreement, the Spanish Super Cup will continue to be hosted in Saudi Arabia until 2029.
