Qatar’s Madibo handed five-match ban for horror tackle on Canada’s Kone

KATHMANDU: Qatari midfielder Assim Madibo has been hit with a five-match suspension by FIFA’s disciplinary committee following a devastating tackle that left Canada’s Ismaël Koné with a broken leg during a World Cup encounter.

The incident occurred during Canada’s commanding 6-0 victory over Qatar last Thursday in Vancouver. Madibo was shown a straight red card for the reckless challenge on Koné.

FIFA confirmed that the length of the ban was determined due to the “serious foul play” involved, noting that Qatar retains the right to appeal the decision.

The suspension effectively ends Madibo’s involvement in the remainder of Qatar’s World Cup campaign.

The ban already factored in Qatar’s final group-stage match, which ended in a 3-1 defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Historic Victory Overshadowed by Tragedy

What should have been a night of pure celebration for Canada—marking their first-ever victory in World Cup history—was severely dampened by the gravity of Koné’s injury.

In the 51st minute of the match, Madibo lunged in with a challenge from behind, sending the Canadian midfielder crashing to the turf. Nearby players immediately signaled for urgent medical assistance as Koné clutched his leg in immense pain.

Subsequent medical assessments confirmed that Koné suffered fractures to both the tibia and fibula in his left leg. He was stretchered off the pitch and rushed to a local hospital for emergency surgery.

Despite the severity of his injury, Koné showed immense fortitude, waving to the crowd as he was carried away on the stretcher. The stadium erupted into a prolonged standing ovation to honor the young midfielder.

Nathan Saliba, who came on to replace the injured Koné, went on to score Canada’s fourth goal of the evening. In a touching tribute, Saliba celebrated by holding up Koné’s jersey to the roaring crowd.

Remorse and Reconciliation Behind the Scenes

The emotional weight of the incident was visible on the pitch, with a distraught Madibo breaking down in tears before being consoled by his teammates.

Canada’s head coach, Jesse Marsch, revealed after the match that Madibo personally visited the Canadian dressing room to offer a heartfelt apology to Koné.

The QFA also released a photograph showing a wheelchair-bound Koné embracing Madibo, with both players proudly wearing their respective national team jerseys.
