France vs Norway: Battle for Group ‘I’ top spot tonight
The Group ‘I’ showdown will determine the group winner, with both sides already securing qualification to the knockout stage.
KATHMANDU: A high-voltage group-stage encounter is set to take place in Boston at 12:45 AM (Nepali time) tonight, as tournament favourites France face rising European side Norway in one of the most anticipated matches of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
The Group ‘I’ showdown will determine the group winner, with both sides already securing qualification to the knockout stage after winning their opening two matches against Senegal and Iraq.
Knockout Spot Secured, But Top Position at Stake
Both France and Norway have confirmed their places in the Round of 32, but tonight’s result will decide who finishes as group winners and who settles for second place.
France currently top the group with six points and a superior goal difference after a dominant win over Iraq in a weather-affected match. Norway sit second, just behind on goal difference.
A draw is enough for France to finish top of the group.
Haaland’s Honest Remark Before Big Game
Norway’s star striker Erling Haaland grabbed headlines after his candid comments following the win over Senegal.
After scoring twice in that match, Haaland said: “To be honest, I’m not thinking too much about that game right now. We are already through to the next stage, which is an incredible achievement.
France will probably beat us, and they will probably win the whole tournament.”
Despite his statement, Norway are not expected to be an easy opponent.
Haaland is also in the race for the tournament’s top scorer, competing with France captain Kylian Mbappé, while Lionel Messi currently leads the scoring chart.
Strong Attack vs Defensive Concerns
Norway have scored more goals than France in the group stage so far, but they have also conceded three goals in two matches. This could give confidence to France’s attacking lineup, featuring Ousmane Dembélé, Bradley Barcola, and Desire Doué.
France, however, will be without head coach Didier Deschamps, who is temporarily away due to a family bereavement following the death of his mother. The French Football Federation expressed full support for the coach during this difficult time.
Assistant coach Guy Stéphan will take charge of the team in his absence.
Tactical Situation and Group Standings
France currently lead Group ‘I’ with six points and a +5 goal difference. Norway follow closely in second place, while Senegal are third and Iraq sit bottom without points.
In the new 48-team World Cup format, the top two teams from each of the 12 groups, along with the best eight third-placed teams, advance to the Round of 32.
France and Norway have already progressed, but Senegal and Iraq still have a slim mathematical chance depending on other results and goal difference.
Recent Form
France: Win – Win – Win – Loss – Win
Norway: Win – Win – Draw – Win – Draw
France’s only recent defeat came in a pre-tournament friendly against Ivory Coast, while Norway have matched strong opposition but remain slightly behind in goal difference.
Head-to-Head Record
France and Norway have faced each other 15 times over the past 103 years.
- France wins: 7
- Norway wins: 4
- Draws: 4
Their last meeting came in a friendly match in 2014, where France recorded a comfortable 4–0 victory, with Olivier Giroud scoring twice.
The two sides have never met in a major international tournament.
Team News
Norway may be forced into defensive changes after Julian Ryerson suffered a thigh issue in the previous match. Markus Pedersen is expected to step in, while players like Leo Østigård and Kristoffer Thorsvedt could also feature.
For France, left-back changes are possible, with Theo Hernández potentially replacing Lucas Digne. Some midfield rotation is also expected due to fixture congestion.
