Ecuador stun Germany 2-1 to reach FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage
The win lifted Ecuador into the list of the eight best third-placed teams, sealing their progression to the Round of 32.
KATHMANDU: Gonzalo Plata struck a decisive second-half winner as Ecuador came from behind to defeat Germany 2-1 on Friday, sealing a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage with a historic victory.
The Group E clash at New York/New Jersey Stadium saw Ecuador produce a spirited comeback against the four-time world champions to secure one of the tournament’s best third-placed finishes and advance to the Round of 32.
Germany, who had already booked their knockout berth after winning their opening two matches, made a dream start.
Leroy Sané opened the scoring just two minutes into the contest, finishing Florian Wirtz’s precise pass from inside the penalty area.
It was Germany’s fastest World Cup goal since 1934.
Ecuador, however, responded almost immediately.
In the ninth minute, Pablo Vite won possession in Germany’s half before finding Nilson Angulo, whose powerful strike from outside the box squeezed through Alexander Pavlović’s legs and beat goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. The goal was Ecuador’s first of the 2026 World Cup.
Germany thought they had earned a penalty early in the second half, but the decision was overturned following a VAR review after Sané was judged to have committed a foul in the build-up.
Ecuador completed the comeback in the 77th minute. Kevin Rodríguez flicked on a corner with a header, allowing Gonzalo Plata to react quickest and poke the ball past Neuer from close range, sparking wild celebrations among Ecuador’s supporters.
The victory lifted Ecuador to four points, enough to qualify for the knockout stage as one of the tournament’s eight best third-placed teams.
Despite the defeat, Germany finished top of Group E on goal difference after ending level on six points with Ivory Coast, who defeated Curaçao 2-0 in the group’s other match.
It marks Ecuador’s first World Cup knockout appearance since the 2006 tournament in Germany.
Nilson Angulo was named Player of the Match following an outstanding performance.
Ecuador head coach Sebastián Beccacece dedicated the achievement to the nation. “This isn’t for me—it’s for the entire country. The players have given our supporters a reason to celebrate, and now they deserve to enjoy this moment,” he said.
Match-winner Gonzalo Plata praised his team’s resilience. “After the struggles we faced in the first two matches, this success feels even more special. We’ve learned a lot and now head into the next round hungry for an even bigger achievement. We have complete faith in our abilities. Wherever we play, our fans make it feel like home, and they deserve enormous credit for this success.”
Germany captain Joshua Kimmich admitted Ecuador deserved the win. “We started well but then gave the ball away too easily and allowed them back into the game. We made things comfortable for them. In the second half, we deserved to lose.”
Forward Deniz Undav echoed that assessment. “Ecuador were far more aggressive and sharper than we were. We have to learn from this. Our performance wasn’t good enough, and we failed to create the quality chances we needed.”
