KATHMANDU: Opposition leader and former Finance Minister Barsaman Pun of the Nepal Communist Party has strongly objected to the government’s decision to place the Asset Investigation Commission under the Prime Minister’s Office.

Speaking during Monday’s discussion on the principles and priorities of the upcoming fiscal year’s budget, Pun argued that a body responsible for promoting good governance should be made independent and fully empowered, not structured in a way that serves the government’s convenience.

He accused the government of promoting “selective good governance” instead of strengthening transparency and accountability.

Pun also acknowledged that the government’s newly announced economic reform plan could be a positive step for improving the national economy, but stressed that it must be backed by a clear and consistent vision during implementation.

He further urged the government to focus seriously on resolving the structural problems facing Nepal’s economy.
