The five parties constituting the ruling coalition are set to affirm their confidence through today's vote, with an anticipated backing of 151 Members of Parliament.
KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ is poised to seek a vote of confidence in today’s House of Representatives meeting, marking his third attempt during his current term.
The move comes in the wake of a reformation in the ruling coalition, with CPN-UML appointing him as Prime Minister for the third time on Dec 25, 2022.
The five parties constituting the ruling coalition are set to affirm their confidence through today’s vote, with an anticipated backing of 151 Members of Parliament.
This support is expected to stem from 76 CPN-UML members, 32 from the Maoist Center, 21 from the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), 12 from the Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP), and 10 from the Unified Socialist Party.
In preparation for the crucial vote, the Prime Minister’s secretariat dispatched a letter to the Federal Parliament, urging the necessary arrangements.
Notably, during a parliamentary party meeting over the weekend, PM Dahal conferred with party leaders, signaling his readiness to pursue a vote of confidence by the scheduled date.
The party has also issued a directive to its lawmakers, instructing them to remain within the Kathmandu Valley in the lead-up to the election of the National Assembly Chair and the impending floor test for PM Dahal.
The House of Representatives session has been convened for March 13, with the constitutional provision of 275 members. A vote of confidence necessitates a majority, requiring at least 138 votes. Hence, for the Prime Minister to secure a decisive majority, 150 votes are imperative.
