PM Oli announces 500 deep boring projects to tackle Madhesh water crisis
The drought has severely impacted both drinking water availability and irrigation services throughout the region.
KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has announced the immediate installation of 500 deep boring water systems in Madhesh Province to address the region’s critical water shortage.
Speaking at the inauguration of a bridge over the Bighi River in Ward No. 8 of Matihani Municipality and a maternity hospital in Ward No. 6 of Mahottari district, PM Oli emphasized the urgency of the situation.
Earlier in the day, he conducted an aerial inspection of drought-hit areas and observed widespread dryness across farmlands.
Following a Cabinet decision on July 23, Madhesh Province was officially declared a disaster-hit zone for three months due to the prolonged lack of rainfall.
The drought has severely impacted both drinking water availability and irrigation services throughout the region.
PM Oli assured that the government would coordinate with all stakeholders for a swift resolution to the crisis.
He reiterated his commitment to ensuring access to clean drinking water and proper irrigation in all eight districts of the province.
He noted that Saptari, located near the Saptakoshi River, has faced relatively fewer challenges, while efforts are ongoing to support the remaining seven districts.
The Prime Minister also pledged to launch a special relief program for those most affected by the water scarcity, especially farmers.
In his address, PM Oli stressed the importance of education, stating, “Where there is education, there is development. Where there is no education, there is poverty and deprivation.” He urged locals to send their children to school without discrimination, calling education a key to family and national progress.
