PM Shah to skip Republic Day address, requests President to speak
He had also previously boycotted Republic Day events during his tenure as mayor.
KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Balendra Shah will not address this year’s Republic Day main ceremony at Tundikhel, according to official sources. He has formally informed the President’s Office about his decision.
The annual Republic Day celebration is held at the Army Pavilion in Tundikhel, where top state officials including the President, Prime Minister, Chief Justice, Speaker, and National Assembly Chairperson attend the event.
Traditionally, the Prime Minister delivers the keynote address during the ceremony.
However, Shah, who has remained less visible in major public state events since taking office, has opted not to speak at this year’s function.
Instead, he has reportedly requested that the President deliver the address on his behalf, sending an official letter to that effect.
In the letter, it is stated that since the President is regarded as the symbolic head of the Republic, it would be appropriate for the head of state to address the Republic Day ceremony.
Sources say the request aligns with a proposal that the President should represent the spirit of the republic in the national celebration.
Under Article 66 of the Constitution of Nepal, the President Ram Chandra Paudel performs duties based on the recommendation and consent of the Council of Ministers.
Based on this constitutional provision, preparations are underway for the President to deliver the Republic Day address this year.
