Parliament arson named RSP candidate
Krishna Kumar Karki, the RSP candidate from Morang–2, has been identified in photos and videos circulating on social media that show the Parliament building being set ablaze on Sept 9 (Bhadra 24).
KATHMANDU: A person involved in setting fire to the Parliament building during the Gen Z movement has been nominated as a candidate by the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP).
Krishna Kumar Karki, the RSP candidate from Morang–2, has been identified in photos and videos circulating on social media that show the Parliament building being set ablaze on Sept 9 (Bhadra 24).
The visuals were widely shared on platforms such as TikTok and Facebook.
Karki, a resident of Ratuwamai Municipality–9 in Morang, had recently returned to Nepal after working abroad.
According to sources close to him, he returned to the country only a few days before the incident.
Despite this, his presence at the site of the arson on September 10 was captured and shared online.
In the footage, Karki is seen reaching the Parliament complex in Baneshwor along with supporters and assisting in the act of arson.
He has admitted his involvement in vandalism and arson, claiming, however, that he only set fire to a chair inside the Parliament premises, while the larger fire in the building was caused by others.
Karki has also acknowledged his involvement in vandalism targeting the residences of political leaders.
He stated that he participated in arson incidents stretching from Balaju to Sorhakhutte, Thamel, Darbar Marg, Rani Pokhari, and up to Singha Durbar.
In the previous election, RSP had fielded Thagendra Neupane as its candidate from the constituency. This time, the party has awarded the ticket to Karki, who spent 12 years working in Japan before returning to Nepal.
Interestingly, Karki’s earlier social media posts show him referring to RSP chair Rabi Lamichhane as a “cooperative fraudster,” raising further questions amid the controversy.
