263 police posts in critical condition: IGP Karki
He noted that even the exact number of temporary police posts has not been properly recorded, highlighting serious gaps in infrastructure management.
KATHMANDU: Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dan Bahadur Karki has revealed that 263 permanent police posts across the country are in a dilapidated condition, warning that many structures are on the verge of collapse due to prolonged neglect and budget constraints.
Speaking at a meeting of the Federalism Strengthening and National Concerns Committee under the National Assembly, IGP Karki said police personnel are being forced to work in unsafe buildings, particularly in border and sensitive areas where infrastructure is critically weak.
He noted that even the exact number of temporary police posts has not been properly recorded, highlighting serious gaps in infrastructure management.
According to him, reconstruction efforts could be improved through better coordination with the Ministry of Federal Affairs and local governments to ensure basic humane working conditions for security personnel.
IGP Karki also raised concerns over disputed police post construction in the Bajura and Humla border areas of Karnali Province, stating that no formal coordination was made with Police Headquarters despite provincial budget allocations for construction. He said the lack of coordination later escalated tensions, leading to clashes.
The disputed area, he added, is not only linked to border issues but also connected to local disputes involving medicinal herb trade and commercial access routes.
In one incident, construction materials were reportedly damaged by opposing groups, while clashes had previously erupted over grazing land disputes, resulting in criminal cases.
Security presence of both Nepal Police and Armed Police Force has been increased in the affected areas, while a long-term solution through proper establishment of police posts in the region is being considered.
