Opposition MP questions govt absence, challenges leadership in Parliament
He also raised concerns over what he described as a growing trend of both the Prime Minister and Finance Minister skipping parliamentary proceedings.
KATHMANDU: An opposition lawmaker in House of Representatives has questioned the functioning of parliament, criticizing the repeated absence of the Prime Minister and Finance Minister during key budget discussions.
Speaking during the session on the principles and priorities of the Appropriation Bill, Rajendra Rai of the CPN-UML said debate cannot proceed meaningfully when the Finance Minister is not present in the House.
He also raised concerns over what he described as a growing trend of both the Prime Minister and Finance Minister skipping parliamentary proceedings.
“Prime Minister does not come, Finance Minister does not come—how is this House supposed to function?” Rai asked in the session.
Challenging the government’s approach, he further said the opposition is capable of running the country if given responsibility.
“I don’t want to change the system, but you have ignored us. The Prime Minister doesn’t come, the Finance Minister doesn’t come. If you also don’t come, who will run the House? It has become a serious question. Hand it over to the opposition—we will run the country. We have the courage to govern; we have done it before and we can do it again,” he said.
