KATHMANDU: Voters who do not have their voter identification cards will still be allowed to cast their ballots in the election scheduled for Falgun 21 (March 5), the Election Commission has announced.

The Commission said the decision was made to ensure voter convenience, following widespread concerns from citizens about lost or damaged voter ID cards.

According to the Commission, a voter ID card will not be mandatory as long as the voter’s name appears on the official voter list.

Instead, voters can use alternative government-issued documents to verify their identity at polling stations. The approved documents include:

  • Nepali Citizenship Certificate
  • National Identity Card
  • Passport
  • Driving License
  • Land Ownership Certificate

Voters must present the original copy of any one of these documents to exercise their voting rights.

However, the Election Commission has made it clear that this facility applies only to individuals whose names are registered in the voter roll.

Without inclusion in the voter list, no form of identification will be accepted.

The Commission stated that the move aims to prevent eligible voters from being deprived of their constitutional right due to technical or documentation issues.
