KATHMANDU: A one-day experimental workshop aimed at enhancing the skills of neurosurgeons and operating room nurses at Nepal Medical College was successfully held.

The workshop focused on improving the effectiveness of treating and performing surgeries on neurosurgical and spinal patients.

Dr. Maya Bhattachan, a neurosurgeon at Nepal Medical College, explained that the workshop involved hands-on practice on anatomical specimens, specifically focusing on how to avoid damaging critical nerves during surgery and ensure effective surgical procedures. She highlighted that such practice sessions on cadavers are essential for preventing errors during live surgeries. “We regularly conduct anatomical practice to enhance the precision of our surgeons. It significantly improves their performance during real surgeries,” Dr. Bhattachan stated.

The workshop also aimed to enrich the experience of medical professionals working at the college.

The event, led by Professor Dr. Krishna Sharma, head of the Neurosurgery Department, saw participation from neurosurgeons and operating room nurses from across the country.

Nepal Medical College provided technical support, including surgical equipment and portable X-rays, to facilitate the workshop.

This was the first time such a workshop was held at Nepal Medical College, though similar events have been conducted elsewhere under the leadership of Dr. Sharma, who also serves as the first chair of the Spinal Surgery chapter in neurosurgery.

Dr. Sharma emphasized the importance of such workshops in enhancing the skills of neurosurgeons and spinal surgeons.

Looking ahead, Nepal Medical College plans to continue organizing similar workshops to further develop the skills and competencies of neurosurgeons and spinal surgeons in the future.

A total of 37 participants, including both neurosurgeons and nurses, took part in the workshop.

The workshop was coordinated by Professor Dr. Krishna Sharma, Dr. Maya Bhattachan, Dr. Suman Rizal, and Dr. Susan Shrestha. The event also saw the participation of Dr. Amit Thapa from Kathmandu Medical College, Dr. Samir Acharya from Annapurna Neuro Hospital, Dr. Nilam Khadka, Dr. Somraj Lamichhane from Trauma Center, Dr. Suraj Thulung from Neuro Bansbari, Dr. Bal Gopal Karmacharya from Manipal Medical College, Dr. Amit Pradhanang from Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, and Dr. Prakash Paudel from Nepal Medicity, among others.
