NHRC calls probe into alleged incitement in Gen Z protests
KATHMANDU: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has recommended the government conduct a detailed investigation into alleged incitement-related involvement of several high-profile figures, including former interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki, former Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal, former Chief Justice Gauri Bahadur Karki, and outgoing Home Minister Sudhan Gurung.
Issuing its investigative report on the Gen Z movement protests, the commission stated that further scrutiny is necessary into whether statements and actions by the concerned individuals may have contributed to escalation, anger, or provocation during the demonstrations.
The NHRC has specifically called for a microscopic investigation into the incidents of Bhadra 23 and 24, focusing on the human and material damage that occurred, the possible involvement of the named individuals, and whether their public remarks influenced protestors or affected public order and security.
According to the report, the inquiry should determine whether the individuals were directly or indirectly involved in the incidents, whether their expressions triggered or intensified public agitation, and whether their conduct disturbed peace and order.
The commission further emphasized that the investigation must ensure fair hearing rights for all concerned parties while maintaining public transparency. If any wrongdoing is established, it recommended that legal and departmental action be taken accordingly.
