KATHMANDU: Newcastle United clinched their first domestic title in 70 years, triumphing in the Carabao Cup with a 2-1 victory over Premier League leaders Liverpool at Wembley on Sunday.

The historic win came thanks to goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak.

Burn, celebrating his selection to the England squad, scored in injury time of the first half with a header from Kieran Trippier’s corner.

In the 52nd minute, Isak doubled Newcastle’s lead with a brilliant finish from a Jacob Murphy pass.

Liverpool, who were knocked out of the Champions League the previous week by Paris Saint-Germain in a penalty shootout, managed to pull one back in injury time through Federico Chiesa.

However, it was too little, too late as Newcastle held on to secure their first major trophy since winning the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.

Additionally, this victory marked their first domestic success since winning the FA Cup in 1955.
