KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress National Assembly member Narayandutta Bhatta on Wednesday strongly criticized senior leader of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), Balen Shah, accusing him of irresponsible leadership and political opportunism.

Speaking during a National Assembly session, Bhata alleged that Shah led actions on Bhadra 24 that he claimed “pushed the country towards chaos,” arguing that there is no guarantee such a person could transform the nation even if he became prime minister.

Bhatta also objected to Shah’s performance as Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, saying Shah failed to fulfill the responsibilities entrusted to him.

He criticized what he described as a trend of abandoning one responsibility to chase another, targeting individuals who, in his words, seek to become ministers or lawmakers under the guise of journalism.

He further argued that such figures have no moral ground to lecture veteran leaders—who, he said, sacrificed blood and sweat for the constitution, the country, and the people—by branding them as “outdated.”

Warning against what he called “stunt politics” on social media, Bhatta said the country now faces the challenge of safeguarding democracy from leaders who prioritize online theatrics over accountability and governance.
