Nationwide holiday declared, national flags lowered to half-mast

KATHMANDU: The Government has declared a nationwide public holiday today (Wednesday) in honor of the youths who lost their lives during the recent “Gen Z” anti-corruption demonstrations.

Recognizing their sacrifice, the interim Cabinet meeting held on Sept 15 (Bhadra 30) decided to observe a national day of mourning on Sept 17 (Ashoj 1) and grant a public holiday.
According to a statement issued by Home Ministry spokesperson Anand Kafle, all government offices across Nepal, as well as Nepali embassies and missions abroad, will remain closed today. National flags at government buildings have also been flown at half-mast in tribute to the victims.
On Tuesday, funeral rites were carried out with full national honors at Pashupati Aryaghat in Kathmandu.
Several bodies were taken to their home districts for cremation according to local traditions, family sources confirmed.
The government stated that the public holiday and official mourning reflect the nation’s respect for the courage, sacrifice, and dedication of the young lives lost during the movement
