KATHMANDU: The Mundum Trail is rapidly gaining recognition as a scenic and accessible tourist hotspot in eastern Nepal.
Brimming with natural beauty, the trail is attracting both domestic and international travelers.
Visitors can experience soaring hilltops, glistening snow-capped peaks, and the flat plains of the Terai—all in a single journey—making it a preferred choice for nature enthusiasts.
The trail also showcases the rich cultural heritage of the Kirat community, with traditional structures, expansive meadows, and local herders’ livestock adding to the adventure.
According to Saroj Basnet, Chairperson of Temkemaiyung Rural Municipality, the trail has been steadily developed as a safe and convenient tourist destination. The municipality is actively building infrastructure and managing facilities to ensure visitors’ safety, with further expansion projects underway.
Deputy Chairperson Ramadevi Rai emphasized that Temkemaiyung’s naturally beautiful landscape has led the local government to prioritize tourism and agriculture. Facilities such as streams, resting spots, and tourism information centers have been established to guide visitors on the trail’s features, geography, attractions, duration, accommodation, and safety.
Tourists can also savor organic food produced by local herders and enjoy the cultural offerings of the Kirat Rai, Sherpa, and Tamang communities. Diverse flora and medicinal herbs along the route further enhance the experience.
A major highlight is the panoramic view of Nepal’s iconic mountains from a single vantage point. From the moderate slopes of the trail, visitors can see more than two dozen peaks, including Charpate, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, Kumbhakarna, Nupse, Everest and Chamlang.
Named after the ‘Mundum’, the religious and cultural text of the Kirat Rai community, the trail now represents a convergence of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and adventure tourism.
With its unique combination of landscape, culture, and adventure, the Mundum Trail is steadily carving out a new identity as a must-visit destination in eastern Nepal.
