KATHMANDU: A coalition comprising the Mukumlung Tansep Chumbo and the Mukumlung Protection Inter-Party Struggle Committee has announced a series of phased protest programs against the under-construction cable car project in the Mukumlung (Pathibhara) area of Taplejung.

Speaking at a press conference held in Kathmandu on Wednesday, the committee stated that despite government instructions to halt construction, work on the cable car project has continued uninterrupted. The groups said they were now compelled to launch organized and phased agitation.

During the press conference, identity-based leader D.K. Singh Thegim alleged that Mukumlung land was being encroached upon for cable car construction through “illegal means, fraud, corruption, and forged documents.”

He further claimed that construction continued even while dialogue and discussions with the government were ongoing, calling it a serious disregard for agreements and negotiations.

According to Thegim, the protest schedule begins with press conferences on March 13 in Kathmandu, Taplejung, and various districts of Koshi Province, demanding an immediate halt to construction.

Further announced programs include an interaction with political parties on May 19, submission of a memorandum to the Prime Minister via the Chief District Officer on May 21, and consultations with various organizations on May 23.

On May 25, the groups will stage sit-ins and corner assemblies with black banners in protest of the cable car project in Taplejung and other districts. The movement will primarily be concentrated in Koshi Province, the organizers said.

The committee has also appealed to all concerned stakeholders and the public to actively participate in the movement aimed at protecting the Mukumlung (Pathibhara) region.
