KATHMANDU: CPN (Maoist Centre) lawmaker Shakti Basnet has drawn the government’s attention to the severe shortage of medical personnel in the country, which he says is depriving citizens of access to basic healthcare services.

Speaking at Wednesday’s session of the House of Representatives, MP Basnet highlighted that health posts and district hospitals across the country are struggling due to a lack of doctors and staff.

He urged the government to urgently fill the vacant positions to ensure proper service delivery.

He pointed out that even hospitals with approved staff quotas are unable to function properly due to delays in deployment. He also noted that many basic hospitals at the local level have not yet received approval for Organogram and Manpower (O&M), preventing the creation of necessary positions.

Calling for better coordination between local, provincial, and federal governments, Basnet demanded immediate action to finalize O&M structures and move ahead with the recruitment process. He also emphasized the need for a special incentive package for health workers serving in remote areas.

“Effective coordination among the three tiers of government is essential. O&M processes must be completed swiftly, and recruitment should begin immediately. Special incentive packages must also be introduced for healthcare workers in remote regions,” he stressed.
