KATHMANDU: Mahalaxmi Bikas Bank has introduced the acceptance of payments from UnionPay Wallet users in Nepal through its Fonepay QR merchant network, further expanding its digital payment ecosystem and enhancing customer convenience.

The service has been implemented in collaboration with UnionPay International via Fonepay.

With this development, UnionPay digital wallet users can now easily make payments by scanning QR codes at Mahalakshmi Bikas Bank-affiliated merchants across Nepal.

The facility is expected to significantly benefit tourists, especially visitors from China and other countries, by reducing their dependence on cash during travel.

Established in 2002, UnionPay is one of the world’s largest payment service providers, with over 9.6 billion cards issued and acceptance in more than 180 countries and regions.

The bank believes this integration will make Nepal’s existing QR infrastructure more efficient and effective, while also supporting its commitment to building a more secure, inclusive, and innovative digital financial ecosystem.

Mahalaxmi Bikas Bank has also announced plans to celebrate the year 2083 BS as its “Digital Promotion Year.” Under this initiative, users of its mobile banking app “Mahalaxmi Smart Sathi” who complete at least one transaction during the first week of Baisakh will be eligible for a lucky draw, with three winners receiving attractive travel packages.

With the slogan “Strong Bank, Successful Partnership,” the bank continues to deliver quality financial services across Nepal. It currently operates 103 branch offices nationwide and serves more than 850,000 customers.
