KATHMANDU: Machhapuchhre Bank has taken a major step to simplify and secure digital payments for Chinese tourists visiting Nepal by signing a strategic agreement with China’s leading digital payment provider, Tenpay.

Tenpay is the official operator of the widely used WeChat Pay platform in China.

Under this partnership, Chinese tourists can now make payments for services and purchases in Nepal directly through WeChat Pay.

While tourists will transact in Chinese yuan (CNY) via their mobile devices, Nepali merchants will receive the equivalent amount in Nepalese rupees directly into their bank accounts.

This eliminates the hassle of currency exchange and ensures faster, transparent transactions.

According to Machhapuchhre Bank, the service is expected to boost Nepal’s tourism, retail, and service sectors.

By enabling cashless payments, it reduces the need for tourists to carry cash and promotes a secure digital ecosystem.

The initiative also aligns with the Nepal Government’s “Digital Nepal Framework” and the central bank’s vision of a cashless economy.
