KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Valley has been facing a shortage of cooking gas (LPG) for the past two weeks, with the scarcity of the Nepal Gas brand particularly affecting consumers.

Nepal Gas holds the largest market share in the valley, and its unavailability has disrupted the daily routines of many households.

With gas cylinders unavailable at retail outlets, consumers have been flocking to the company’s office in Balaju Industrial Area, often standing in long queues.

The office currently allows only one cylinder per person, citing a lack of new stock in the depot.

The shortage is primarily due to delayed gas shipments from India.

A misunderstanding with transporters caused gas to be held up in Dhading, but authorities expect normal supply to resume once the issue is resolved.

Demand for LPG rises 10–25% during the winter months, further complicating the situation.

While the Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) has assured that there is no overall shortage and sufficient quotas are in place to meet winter demand, consumers report feeling the impact of limited availability.

Retailers have confirmed that supply and transportation challenges are behind the disruption.

The NOC has urged the public not to engage in hoarding and to avoid spreading rumors.

Officials expect the situation to stabilize in the coming days once transportation is smooth, but immediate relief for consumers remains limited.
