KATHMANDU: Influential Nepali Congress leader and lawmaker Dr. Shekhar Koirala has expressed deep concern over the country’s deteriorating political and social situation.

Speaking at the 20th anniversary celebration of Gyanjyoti Women’s Secondary School in Kathmandu on Friday, he emphasized that responsibility for reversing this downward trend rests with schools, politicians, civil servants, and all sectors of society.

“Currently, not only our politics but also our social conditions are in decline, worsening day by day,” Dr. Koirala said. “It is now the duty of schools, politicians, and civil servants to address this challenge.”

He urged society to focus on collective, positive action rather than succumbing to despair. “A united and constructive approach is essential for nation-building,” he added.

Dr. Koirala also criticized state investment and policies in education, noting that distributing grants haphazardly is insufficient for meaningful development. “Education is the most important pillar of democracy. Only an educated society can become a civilized nation,” he stressed.

Highlighting the significance of women’s education, he said that educating even one woman in a family can uplift the entire household.

He called on lawmakers, the government, and media to introspect on their shortcomings and work together to promote public schools.

Finally, he emphasized the need for the government to focus on improving the quality and excellence of community schools, asserting that a strong education system is key to putting Nepal on the global map.
