Khushbu Oli reports threats after “Sanatan State” remarks
She alleged that the threats were being issued through social media, reportedly by individuals from the Christian community.
KATHMANDU: Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) Chief Whip Khushbu Oli has claimed that she has been receiving threats of rape and death after she advocated for Nepal to be declared a “Sanatan state.”
Speaking during Wednesday’s House of Representatives meeting, Oli said the threats began after she raised the issue of reinstating Nepal as a Hindu/Sanatan state in parliament.
She alleged that the threats were being issued through social media, reportedly by individuals from the Christian community.
Oli argued that her remarks were made in the context of what she described as the constitutional and demographic reality of Nepal, claiming that more than 90 percent of the population follows Sanatan traditions. She further stated that discussions about restoring Nepal’s identity as a Sanatan state had triggered a “planned” campaign of intimidation against her.
In her address, she said, “When I raised in this House that Nepal should be a Sanatan state as ensured by the Constitution and as supported by the majority of Sanatan followers, I started receiving organized threats of murder and rape through social media. Is this the result of secularism brought by the republic?”
While stating that she personally could endure such intimidation, Oli emphasized that the threats should not be seen as only an attack on her but as an attack on the broader Sanatan community.
