Sri Lankan president orders preparedness plans ahead of possible El Nino impact
The instruction was given during a meeting at the Presidential Secretariat to review possible El Nino impacts and the preparedness of relevant institutions, the PMD said.
COLOMBO: Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake instructed state agencies to prepare detailed plans to protect food security, drinking water supplies and electricity generation from the possible impact of El Nino conditions, the President’s Media Division (PMD) said on Thursday.
The instruction was given during a meeting at the Presidential Secretariat to review possible El Nino impacts and the preparedness of relevant institutions, the PMD said.
Officials briefed the president on current reservoir water levels, water management plans and measures needed to manage possible pressure on agriculture, drinking water supply and energy generation.
The PMD said officials expected the possible El Nino conditions to resemble those experienced during 2016-2017. They said water management plans had been formulated accordingly, and steps had already been taken to begin the 2026 Yala cultivation season about one and a half months earlier than usual.
Dissanayake also instructed officials to submit detailed plans to ensure adequate electricity generation, water for the upcoming cultivation season and the protection of drinking water resources.
